Where Nature Outside Your Back Door Meets Engaging Unit Studies + Real Science
Help your child grow in scientific knowledge, careful observation, and wonder through living books, outdoor exploration, hands-on discovery, and meaningful encounters with God’s Creation.
Gentle + Classical Nature Volume 1: Inland Waterways & Forests is an 18-unit, Charlotte Mason-inspired science and nature study that weaves biology, zoology, botany, ecology, poetry, recitation, nature lore, and hands-on exploration into one flexible rhythm.
Across a full year, your family will explore freshwater habitats, animals, plants, forests, and the fascinating relationships between them. Children encounter amphibians, fish, aquatic insects, waterbirds, mammals, reptiles, insects, trees, fungi, and more while learning about anatomy, classification, life cycles, adaptation, ecosystems, and other foundational scientific ideas.
Created for ages K4–4th grade, Nature: Forests combines unit-study science with the kind of nature study that happens right outside your back door. Children read and discuss living science, observe the natural world for themselves, keep collections and records, practice narration and recitation, and gradually learn to recognize the birds, trees, wildflowers, habitats, and patterns of Creation around them.
Each of the 18 units is designed to be enjoyed over approximately two weeks, creating a full 36-week year with plenty of time to read, observe, explore, and make meaningful connections rather than rushing from topic to topic.
LIVING SCIENCE & CREATURE STUDY
Rich readings and beautifully illustrated Student Notebook pages introduce children to real scientific vocabulary and concepts through animals and habitats they can understand and enjoy. They’ll explore everything from how fish breathe and frogs transform to reptile characteristics, bird adaptations, plant reproduction, and the interconnected lives of creatures within freshwater and forest ecosystems.
NATURE STUDY & OUTDOOR OBSERVATION
Science moves beyond the page as your child learns to truly notice the world around them. Nature walks, bird observation, wildflower and tree identification, collections, descriptions of familiar walks and views, and seasonal observation develop the habit of paying careful attention to God’s Creation while building genuine knowledge of the natural world.
STORIES, POETRY & MEANINGFUL RECITATION
Living books, vintage nature writings, poetry, and short memory statements give beautiful language to the things your child is observing and studying. Rather than learning disconnected facts, children repeatedly encounter scientific ideas through reading, recitation, narration, pictures, and firsthand experience so vocabulary and concepts have something real to attach to.
HANDS-ON EXPLORATION & NATURE SKILLS
Raise and observe butterflies, create a terrarium, study an ant colony, examine flowers, keep a Nature Collection Notebook, practice nature journaling, and explore each unit through optional projects and activities. Spanish or French nature vocabulary, picture-painting games, narration, and observation exercises add even more opportunities to develop memory, attention, language, and a lifelong relationship with the natural world.
