This brand new addition to the Gentle + Classical Nature program takes the beautiful concepts you love and reworks them so that form meets function! This Student Notebook has been designed to take all of the content and explorations that you experience through Gentle + Classical Nature and give you an actionable and concrete way to express all that's being learned without being dry, boring worksheets.

NOTE: If you are purchasing the Gentle + Classical Nature Volume 1 Digital Bundle, this item (digital) is already included!

What's included?

This Student Notebook covers all 18 units of Gentle + Classical Nature Volume 1 and so much more. (Click Scope and Sequence below for unit topics.)

This Student Notebook is unique in that it is a hybrid notebook/textbook/journal for your students.

Each unit your student will be presented with the same opportunities:

Nature Nuggets- These are excerpts from beautifully written pre-1920s living nature books that help the unit topic come alive. For Level 2 students (ages 2nd-4th grade), these can be read aloud by Mom or assigned for independent reading.

Creature/Creation Corner- This unique page each unit gives your student an opportunity to apply what they've learned via the Nature Nuggets, Memory Statements, or via the book selections for the unit. In Level 2, these include a mixture of discussion and writing opportunities that foster living discussions about the topics. In some units, your student will be prompted to color, circle, or write to complete the exercises.

Poetry Recitation and Copywork- Each unit, your student will work on a poem recitation, with the same poem focus for 3 units (or 6 weeks). This page provides the poem along with tracking checkboxes to encourage daily practice. Below that, there is a copywork area with a dashed font that should be suitable for most 2nd-4th grade students.

Narration- This page is created for your Level 2 student to draw their observations from their studies or explorations for the week. This is completely open-ended. There is an area below the drawing area for their thoughts about their drawing and explorations during the unit.

Additional Activity- Each unit features a varied additional activity on this page. Life cycles or other additional information or interactive activities bring further connections to your unit's studies.

Attainments- Each unit features a tree, flower, or bird of focus. The species or group chosen are broadly available across North America (and you can always substitute). This portion focuses on detailing a species or group with bright images. The adjoining page offers additional information, Nature Nuggets, or more activities and topics like leaf shapes, composite flowers, seed types, and more.

Other pages included throughout are:

  • Project overview and tracking sheets for the three terms projects outlined in the Teacher's Guide.
  • French/Spanish Review (oral)
  • Attainment Review (oral)

Beautiful but cumbersome

The images are very beautiful. However, there is much that is difficult about this curriculum. In the student workbook, there are different ‘nature nuggets’. They are too hard for my student to read, and sometimes too difficult to understand why this excerpt was selected. We just skip them. As the teacher to three different students, not having a Teachers guide that has at least the small images of the student pages means I have to commandeer one of my students notebooks so I know what they are supposed to be doing. I do like the images, I do like the coupons, I do like the facts about the trees, the birds, and the insects. We will not be using again. I love your holiday kits just not this curriculum.

Hi Tiffany! We appreciate your honest review. Because the Nature content is meant to be whole-family and span multiple ages, those nature nuggets hit about mid-elementary school. The intention is that they are read-aloud and then discussed together. We also understand the perspective on the Student Notebook not having a copy of the content in the Teacher's Guide. Our original motivation for not including that is simply budgetary. As a super small company, we do limited print runs and work hard to keep things minimized. But as we grow, we will absolutely keep this recommendation in mind. Feel free to reach out to us for a complimentary version of the Nature 1 grids to see if having the pre-planning done for you reduces some of the 'bulk.' Best wishes in your homeschool!

Great Resource

This is a great resource. I love that every unit has a poem and copy work to accompany to accompany the lessons. My boys and I will definitely get a lot of use out of it.

My only critique is that I would prefer everything pertaining to a specific animal/topic to be grouped together. For example, the first project is butterfly metamorphosis, but the copy work and poem come later. The Caterpillar poem is in Unit 2 along with fish and other creatures. The butterfly Nature Nugget is in Unit 9 with the butterfly copy work and life cycle. This is not make or break for me. Since I purchased the digital version, I can print pages as I need them.

Hi Nikisha! Thanks for the helpful review. I wanted to add some context here for those who may read it to help them better understand the method to my madness ;)

Charlotte Mason wasn't huge on 'themes' and unit studies. I clearly diverge from following her 'purely' by having units that are themed, but I don't lay into themes so hard that I don't also include things in what seems like a random way.

CM called this the 'science of relations'. You have full flexibility to make it match better if you want it too (as you clearly plan to). Personally I like to sprinkle topics all around for review which gives our kids an opportunity to make connections themselves (which was CM's issue with unit studies).

So this aspect of my program makes it not a rigid 'unit study' but rather a CM/Classical program organized into a loose 'unit study' format. In this way it's fully eclectic. I hope that's helpful!

Gorgeous and informative

I am looking forward to using this all year! We just started but I have read ahead as the illustrations were beautiful and there was so much information that I didn’t know. The quality of the paper is good and will be easy to write on. Overall, I’ll be using this again for younger siblings!!
