A Christ-Centered Civics Study for Understanding Freedom + Faithful Citizenship

Gentle + Classical Explorer: Constitution & Citizenship is a 12-week (or 24-week), Christ-centered unit study for grades 4–7 that brings the Constitution, American government, history, citizenship, virtue, logic, art, music, poetry, and Scripture into one rich, engaging study.
Through engaging history, biographies, meaningful discussion, creative work, and age-appropriate debate, students learn how our government was designed, which freedoms the Constitution protects, and what it means to live responsibly alongside people who may think, believe, and speak differently than they do.
Complete four lessons per week for a 12-week study or slow the rhythm to two lessons per week and enjoy it over 24 weeks. Either way, you have a clear guide for exploring important ideas together while retaining the freedom to adjust the pace and activities to fit your family.
CONSTITUTION + AMERICAN GOVERNMENT
Help government finally make sense. Students follow the story of how the Constitution came to be and gradually build an understanding of separation of powers, checks and balances, the three branches of government, Congress, the presidency, the courts, the Bill of Rights, and other foundational principles of American government.
RIGHTS, RESPONSIBILITIES + FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP
Constitutional freedoms are explored alongside self-government, human dignity, justice, charity, responsibility, and love of neighbor. Weekly citizenship statements and virtue study help children consider how free people can wisely steward their rights while living in community with others.
LOGIC, DEBATE + THOUGHTFUL DISCUSSION
Give your child tools for thinking carefully and communicating clearly. Through playful, age-appropriate debate topics, students practice making claims, giving reasons and evidence, recognizing faulty arguments, listening to another point of view, persuading thoughtfully, and many other helpful skills that foster productive communication and logical thinking.
HISTORY, ART, MUSIC + LIVING IDEAS
Fine art, American folk songs, poetry, historical biographies, Scripture, narration, and creative work place civics within a much richer story. These beautiful and memorable connections allow children to encounter the people, ideas, sacrifices, and questions surrounding American freedom rather than experiencing government as a list of facts to memorize.
A Note About Hot Topics & Partisan Politics
Constitution & Citizenship does not teach partisan politics or tell students which political party, candidate, or contemporary policy position they should support.
Instead, students learn the structure of constitutional government, the freedoms it protects, and the skills needed to listen, reason, discern, disagree, and participate thoughtfully. Throughout the study, Scripture reminds us that our ultimate citizenship is in heaven and that our earthly freedoms should be stewarded with wisdom, humility, justice, charity, and love.
